Purpose and Aim

 This unit introduces the learner to skills theory and ethical approaches in counselling.

 This unit is not recognised for practice as a counsellor.

1. Understand counselling skills theory.
1.1Differentiate between counselling and other helping activities.
1.2 Describe  person centred counselling.
2. Understand ethical approaches in counselling.
2.1Describe the ethical responsibilities of counsellors.
3. Understand the skills, knowledge and attitudes desirable in counselling.
3.1Identify the qualifications required for working in counselling settings.
3.2 Describe skills used in counselling to include:
  • communication skills
  • organisational skills.
3.3 Describe attitudes that underpin counselling.
3.4 In a simulated setting demonstrate:
  • how to build rapport
  • empathy
  • active listening skills
  • effective responding
  • questioning techniques
  • the use of paraphrasing and summarising techniques
  • the use of silence
  • the use verbal and non verbal prompts
  • keeping to time boundaries.
4. Understand how to develop self awareness in helping settings.
4.1Describe the purpose of personal reflection.
4.2 Identify personal strengths when working in helping settings.
4.3 Identify where personal development is needed for working in helping settings.

Assessment Methods:

There are no prescribed assessment methods for this unit. Assessments used should be fit for purpose for the unit and learners, and generate evidence of achievement for all the assessment criteria.

Assessment Information:

AC 2.1 Ethical responsibilities will include personal responsibilities in line with current BCAP standards of good practice for:

  • respect
  • building an appropriate relationship.
AC 3.2 A minimum of five skills.
AC 3.3 A minimum of two attitudes.
AC 3.4 A minimum of three skills and a minimum of two techniques.

Assessor Requirements:
