The Agored Cymru Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing (Wales) focuses on the knowledge and skills required by a dental nurse for safe and effective practice, as specified by the General Dental Council (GDC). It ensures that they are able to apply the practice of dental nursing principles which derive from biomedical and behavioural sciences, taking into account the needs of different patient groups. It looks at the study of:
- oral and dental anatomy and physiology
- dental and oral diseases and preventative practice
- dental treatment
- patient care and procedures.
All learners must successfully achieve the first unit Preparing to Train for Dental Nursing (PF33CY003) prior to commencing the other units.
The qualification has been developed in partnership with the All Wales Faculty for Dental Care Professionals (AWFDCP) at Bangor University. This collaboration brings a number of key benefits to the programme linked to strategic objectives at a national level.
The AWFDCP provide dental specific expertise to the award, ensuring that the programme remains driven by the requirements of the sector. The AWFDCP support the programme development and quality assurance processes to ensure it meets, and exceeds, the standards expected by the General Dental Council.
The programme has been developed specifically for Wales and the Welsh dental nurse workforce. Agored Cymru and the AWFDCP have worked closely with stakeholders to ensure that the programme is aligned to national needs and requirements. This extends from the strategic development partnership between Agored and the AWFDCP, to the nation specific details embedded within the programme units.
The programme has been structured to sit within the skills-escalation framework developed by the AWFDCP. This framework provides a mechanism for dental nurses to progress through educational levels and registered titles, should they wish to do so. With this, the programme forms a foundation for national DCP workforce development driven by overarching healthcare policy.
The AWFDCP, through Bangor University have developed a mandatory mentorship programme for clinical supervisors. This programme guides mentors through the theory and practice of mentorship and details the specific requirements of the work-based competency record (also developed and provided by the AWFDCP). This mentorship programme builds professional standardisation in the clinical environment and strengthens programme quality.
Programme provision will be overseen by both Agored and the AWFDCP. However, to minimise complexity, providers will apply, communicate and manage the qualification through Agored as with any other programme.
Centres should apply to add the qualification to their framework in the usual way.
