The purpose of the First Aid at Work (FAW) and Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) qualifications is for the learner to attain the knowledge and practical competencies required to deal with a range of workplace first aid situations.
Any centre wishing to deliver either the FAw or EFAW qualification must have approval from Agored Cymru and must use the Agored Cymru assessment materials. Centre managers are able to provide further information on this.
These certificates are valid for three years from the date of successful attainment. In the case of the First Aid at work qualification, the date of certification is based on the achievement of the final unit.
The units within these qualifications cannot be replaced with any other first aid units.
The First Aid Awarding Organisation Forum has provided Assessment Principles for these qualifications. These principles, which provide further information on training, assessment and quality assurance processes, can be found on the relevant qualification page of the Agored Cymru website.
FAW/EFAW Contact Hours
The total contact hours for the FAW qualification, excluding breaks, should be for a minimum period of 18 hours over three days. If award is for the purposes of re-qualifying then the total contact hours could be reduced to a minimum of 12 hours over two days (providing the learner's FAW certificate has not expired by more than one calendar month).
When requalifying, experienced First Aid Trainers have the option to advance straight to the FAW assessments. The pre-requisites for this process include:
- The Trainer must provide evidence of teaching a regulated FAW qualification within the past 3 monthsof sitting the assessments
- The Trainer must provide evidence of a satisfactory Internal Quality Assurance observation delivering a First Aid qualification within the past 12 months of sitting the assessments.
For EFAW, the total contact hours for the qualification, excluding breaks, should be for a minimum period of 6 hours over one day. The maximum number of weeks over which the qualification can be attained is 10 for FAW and 3 for EFAW (special considerations may be taken into account to increase this duration if necessary).
A minimum of two-thirds of the training time should be face to face learning.
Note: Contact hours means time set aside for direct teaching and practical time.
The maximum number of learners per trainer or learners per assessor at any one time is 12.
All learner work must be completed independently, in the presence of the assessor.
