Dr Zbig Sobiesierski

Dr Zbig Sobiesierski joined the Board in 2014 as an appointed member. Zbig is also a member of the Finance and General Purposes Committee.

Zbig was born and brought up in Swansea. He graduated from the University of Exeter with a degree and Doctor of Philosophy in physics.

Returning to Wales in 1986, Zbig undertook research in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Cardiff University.

In 1992, Zbig left Cardiff University to become the first Hitachi Associate Professor in Quantum Materials Engineering at the Research Centre for Interface Quantum Electronics, University of Hokkaido, Sapporo, Japan.

On his return to the UK, Zbig worked from 1993-1996 as a lecturer at the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Cardiff University.

Zbig then went on to study for a Master of Science in Communicating Science at Techniquest / University of Glamorgan, later, lecturing on the Bachelor of Arts in Science, Society and Media at the University of the West of England.

In 1999, Zbig joined Cardiff University's Centre for Lifelong Learning and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2004. In 2008, he was appointed Director of Studies and, four years later, was promoted to Joint Head of Centre and Co-Dean of Lifelong Learning.

During his time at Cardiff University, Zbig has had significant involvement with quality assurance processes, including validation and re-validation of programmes, and he has been an external examiner at the University of Glamorgan and the Open University.

Zbig has been a member of the Senate and Academic Standards and Quality Committee since 2010.
